Snail Shell
(Mollusca, Gastropoda, Cepaea Nemoralis)

Collected by : Mr G.W. Temperley
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland

This species is found throughout Britain except for parts of northern Scotland. It lives in a variety of habitats but prefers dryer conditions. It is common on sand dunes. The shell of this species has a very variable colour pattern ranging from almost black to white and sometimes has dark or pale stripes. Snails with stripes are more common in grassy areas where their markings give them camouflage, whereas snails without stripes tend to be more common in woodland areas.
