Gastropod
(Animalia, Invertebrata, Mollusca, Gastropoda, Trochus Niloticiformis)

Faxoe, Denmark
Chalk Formation, Cretaceous, Cenomanian - Maastrichtian

This fossil is a cast of the inside of the original sea snail shell, which formed the mould and was later dissolved away. All the coils of the cast show that the shell was filled mainly with coarse shelly sand. This probably happened when the shell was buried in the sand on the sea floor after the snail itself died. The snail probably fed by grazing on sponges.
