Bivalve
(Animalia, Invertebrata, Mollusca, Bivalvia, Pecten Sp.)
Red Crag, Quaternary, Pleistocene
The barnacle and worm tube are cemented (glued) onto the large flat scallop shell. The scallop probably died and its two shells separated before the other animals became attached to it. The tubes on the shell were made by a Serpula worm to provide protection for its soft body on the seafloor. Barnacles are a special type of crustacean (related to crabs and lobsters) that can live on the rocks on the sea shore.
