This painting illustrates a scene from Sir Walter Scott's ballad 'The Lady of the Lake'. The heroine, Ellen Douglas, stands on the left in a white dress. Her father, Chief of the Clan Douglas, is separating the two rivals who wish to marry her - Roderick Dhu and Graeme Malcolm. Sir Walter Scott's novels and poems were popular sources of subjects for 19th century artists. Alexander Johnston was a Scottish artist who painted many historical scenes. He exhibited this painting at the Royal Academy, London in 1849.
