Great Spotted Woodpecker
(Chordata, Aves, Piciformes, Picidae, Dryobates Major)
The greater spotted woodpecker is found throughout Europe and Asia. It is normally found in mature woodland. It has a very varied diet of seeds and insects which it pecks from dead wood. It is also known to eat the eggs and young of other birds. The woodpeckers nest in tree holes high above the ground. Both parents help to excavate a new hole at the start of each breeding season, a process that normally takes two or three weeks.
