James Peel (1811-1906)
View In Borrowdale
Oil on canvas
width: 66.5 cm, height: 43.5 cm
Borrowdale is situated beside Lake Coniston in the Lake District. The artist James Peel painted many views in the area from the 1840s to 1880s. The detail and bright colour of this landscape view were influenced by Peel's admiration of the paintings of Pre-Raphaelite artists. Peel was born in Newcastle and moved to London in about 1840. He was friendly with the Pre-Raphaelite artists William Bell Scott and Ford Madox Brown.
