Luke Clennell (1781-1840)
The Baggage Wagon
Oil on canvas
width: 76.7 cm, height: 63.5 cm
Horses pulling a heavy army baggage wagon have been frightened by a sudden flash of lightning in this night-time scene. Luke Clennell quite often painted dramatic scenes such as this. Clennell was apprenticed as a wood-engraver in the North East engraving workshop of Thomas Bewick. After that, he moved to London in 1804. He first worked as an engraver, and then established himself as a painter.
