David Jones (1895-1974)
The Mother Of The West
Ink, pencil and watercolour on paper
width: 35.0 cm, height: 25.6 cm
The picture illustrates the theme of Christianity emerging from the wreck of the Roman Empire. It shows the symbolic Lamb of God suckling from the Roman wolf. The lamb takes the place of the infant Romulus and Remus, who were the founders of Rome, according to legend. Romulus and Remus were said to have been reared by a wolf. The landscape is strewn with ancient and modern items of warfare. These refer to World War 2, which was taking place at that time. David Jones worked in the semi-Surrealist Neo-Romantic style of the 1940s. Painting was a means of expressing his mystical and religious beliefs.
