Richard Westall (1765-1836)
The Earle Of Essex's First Interview With Queen Elizabeth After His Return From Ireland
Ink and watercolour on paper
width: 54.7 cm, height: 44.1 cm
The Earl of Essex commanded the large force sent to Ireland in 1599 against the rebel Earl of Tyrone. Queen Elizabeth I was furious when Lord Essex signed an unauthorised truce, and ordered his arrest. The exaggerated reactions of the figures in this scene are part of the History painting style of the late 18th century. The straight noses and foreheads of the figures follow an artistic convention of the time, which was influenced by ancient Greek sculpture. Richard Westall painted many historical scenes in watercolour. He worked in London.
