Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873)
Deer Of Chillingham Park, Northumberland
Oil on canvas
width: 155.3 cm, height: 228.5 cm
This huge picture was designed to be hung high up in the tall dining hall at Chillingham Castle, Northumberland. It is one of a pair of pictures painted for the 6th Earl of Tankerville, who was a friend of the artist. The stag is shown in an heroic pose, outlined against the clouds. The doe and fawn in the foreground are positioned to give contrasting views of their heads. Their soft brown fur stands out against the green grass behind. Edwin Landseer was an enormously successful London artist, famous for his paintings of animals.
