Outer Gabbard

width: 510 mm, length: 1.88 m, height: 1.35 m

1 in 24 scale model of the 'Outer Gabbard' lightship built by R. Stephenson and Company at Hebburn on the River Tyne in 1888. She was used off the south east coast of England. These floating lighthouses were moored at places where shifting sand banks made traditional lighthouses ineffective. The lightship could move around to mark dangerous build-ups under the water.
