In 1817, R. and W. Hawthorn Limited was founded in Newcastle. The company initially concentrated on shipbuilding and marine engineering. In 1831, production of locomotives began at its Forth Bank Works. This is a construction drawing for a locomotive and tender built by Hawthorn in 1859. It was exported to South Africa and was operated by the Cape Town Railway and Dock Company.
