Portrait Of Lawrence Monck

Oil on canvas
width: 102.5 cm, height: 126.9 cm

Lawrence Monck is shown wearing a version of 17th century costume. This was popular for 18th century portraits because it added an air of grandeur, and wouldn't look dated within a few years. The costume itself probably didn't exist, but was adapted from studies of paintings and fabric. The salmon pink colouring of the cloak and belt creates a dazzling contrast with the gleaming black satin of his clothes. Lawrence Monck was the father of Jane Monck, who married Sir William Middleton of Belsay Castle, Northumberland. The portrait is by the Derby artist Joseph Wright.
