John Martin (1789-1854)

The Bard

Oil on canvas
width: 157.0 cm, height: 215.5 cm

'The Bard' illustrates Thomas Gray's poem of the same title. This describes the story of the destruction of the Welsh bards by Edward I in the 13th century. The last surviving Welsh bard is shown cursing the English troops below, before plunging to his death. The enormous army is dwarfed by the awe-inspiring scale of the mountains. This was a feature of the Sublime landscape style of this period. The castle was based on illustrations of Harlech in Wales, but the landscape was probably based on images of the Alps.
