John Martin (1789-1854)

The Expulsion Of Adam And Eve From Paradise

Oil on canvas
width: 112.3 cm, height: 77.2 cm

This Bible subject shows Adam and Eve after they have been expelled from the Garden of Eden. They are wandering through the bleak landscape of the newly formed earth. This is the second version of this subject that John Martin painted. It was produced whilst he was working on his mezzotint illustrations to John Milton's long poem, 'Paradise Lost' (1667). This retold in poetry the Biblical story of the beginning of the world. The sharp rocky forms and red-and-grey colouring are in the Sublime landscape style, which aimed at awe-inspiring scenes.
