George Edward Horton (1859-1950)
Study In Holland
Pencil and watercolour on paper
width: 34.3 cm, height: 25.1 cm
George Horton was known for his misty impressionistic views, often showing water. His watercolours balance recognisable features with abstract qualities of form and colour. In this view, small areas of bright colour shine out from surrounding pinky grey washes of paint. Reflections on the water increase the pattern-like quality of the scene. Horton painted watercolour views in Rotterdam and Dordrecht from about 1897.
