Richard Principal Leitch
An Alpine Village
Watercolour, pencil and watercolour on paper
width: 38.5 cm, height: 25.6 cm
This alpine scene shows a pretty village and church beneath high crags, with a snow-capped mountain in the distance. Scenes of faraway places were popular with collectors at this time. The bright colours and precise detail of this view are typical of watercolours in the middle of the 19th century. Richard Leitch may have accompanied his artist brother William on his travels in Italy and Switzerland in the 1830s.
