John Robert Cozens (1752-1799)
The Gulf Of Salerno - Raito From Vietri
Pencil and watercolour on paper
width: 52.8 cm, height: 36.6 cm
The study for this watercolour was made during John Robert Cozens' trip to Italy in 1782-83. He accompanied the wealthy young art collector William Beckford. This view of the Gulf of Salerno has the simplicity and grandeur that made Cozens' work admired by his contemporaries. He liked to create a poetic impression of a place in his work. Mountain views such as this belonged to the Sublime landscape style, which was intended to produce a feeling of awe. Cozens' pictures influenced the watercolour painters JMW Turner and Thomas Girtin.
