Thomas James Lloyd (1849-1910)
A Wet Sunday dated 1893
Watercolour and watercolour on paper
width: 35.0 cm, height: 22.2 cm
This late Victorian scene is an affectionate portrayal of a wet country Sunday. Village people are walking home, including an old lady under a huge umbrella. The view probably shows countryside around London, where the artist Tom Lloyd lived. The watercolour paint has been dabbed onto the paper with the brush, giving a soft, blotted effect in keeping with the rain-soaked scene. The soft quality of the scene is increased by the absence of drawn outlines.
