John Martin (1789-1854)

The Plains Of Heaven published 1857

Ink on paper
width: 103.8 cm, height: 71.8 cm

This print was made by the engraver Thomas Maclean for the artist John Martin. It shows the final scene in the 'Last Judgement' series, which Martin painted shortly before he died. He has represented heaven as an idyllic landscape in lovely blues and greens extending into the far distance. In the centre, angels and cherubs are chasing butterflies. Behind them is an extensive blue lake bordered by waterfalls and woodland glades. On the right is Mount Zion, topped by large cedar trees.
