John Martin (1789-1854)

The Last Judgement published 1857

Ink on paper
width: 103.5 cm, height: 80.0 cm

This print was made by the engraver Thomas Maclean for John Martin. It represents the Day of Judgement - the first of Martin's three huge 'Last Judgement' paintings. The four archangels at the corners of the throne of God in the sky sound the last trump. The black-clad Avenging Angel flies over the scene on the right. On the right of the picture are sinners, slipping into the chasm in the centre. On the other side of the chasm are the saved people, gathering on the slopes of Mount Zion at Jerusalem. Martin has included Shakespeare and Michelangelo among the saved souls.
