John Martin (1789-1854)

The Great Day Of His Wrath published 1857

Ink on paper
width: 103.2 cm, height: 71.5 cm

This print was made by the engraver Thomas Maclean for John Martin. It shows the second of Martin's three 'Last Judgement' pictures, painted at the end of his career. The scene follows the account given in the Book of Revelation in the Bible, which describes earthquake, tumbling mountains, and a blood-red and black sky. At the front of the picture, sinners are falling into an enormous chasm. In the centre background, an entire city on a massive rock is being hurled to destruction.
