Norman Cornish (born 1919)

Pit Road

Oil on board
width: 119.2 cm, height: 90.9 cm

This strongly outlined and vigorously painted picture shows a miner on his way to work, or returning home from the mine. The sky is dark, and the grass colour has the washed-out appearance of night-time. A large heap of coal or spoil is visible over the fence. Norman Cornish is a former miner, whose pictures show scenes around his home town of Spennymoor, County Durham.
