John Clayton Adams (1840-1906)
Hayfield
Oil on canvas
width: 122.3 cm, height: 81.6 cm
These country children have brought the midday meal for the men resting in the background. Now the children are playing amongst the cut hay. Like many Victorian paintings, the picture emphasises the picturesque aspects of rural life, rather than the hard work of harvesting. The sunlight and colours are typical of John Adams' landscapes. The view is probably in the south of England, where the artist worked.
