David Thomas Robertson (1879-1952)
Snow On Tunstall Hills, Sunderland
Oil on canvas
width: 153.4 cm, height: 101.6 cm
Horses have brought a wagonload of food for sheep on Tunstall Hills, above Sunderland. Many artists have been attracted to the special light effects produced by snow. In this picture, reddish hues are reflected from the horses' coats onto the snow. These mix with the blue of their shadows on the ground. David Robertson was a Sunderland artist who specialised in animal pictures, particularly horses. This is one of his largest and most important pictures.
